The Benoni Defense is characterized by black’s early c5 move. The Benoni is a sharp, fighting, on the edge defense. Some claim it is unsound as white obtains a central wedge at d5 but black gains activity. The normal setups give him open lines, a powerful g7 bishop, and a dynamic queenside pawn majority.
